Dear Students, Families, Staff, and Community Members,
Welcome to the 2026-27 school year in the Okanagan Similkameen School District.
After what can only be described as a very challenging summer for our neighbours in Summerland and the surrounding area, marked by evacuations, the loss of homes, and weeks of smoke, there is something reassuring about looking ahead to a new school year, renewed routines, and clearer skies. Our hearts go out to all those affected by the wildfires, and we wish everyone strength, healing, and a positive path forward.
As we begin the school year, our district remains committed to student well being and continues to be guided by our Strategic Plan. We strive each day to support academic success, social-emotional well being, and inclusive learning environments where every student feels safe, valued, and has a strong sense of belonging. I want to acknowledge the incredible work our staff does in working to attain these goals.
Over the past four years, our district has benefited from the leadership and dedication of an outstanding Board of Education. Through their governance and support, SD53 has become a place where innovation is encouraged, students thrive, and staff feel valued and respected. With municipal elections taking place across British Columbia this October, I encourage all eligible voters to participate in selecting the individuals who will serve as school trustees in our communities. One area we continue to navigate in education is the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI). Last year the district developed an SD53 AI Guiding Principles document SD53 AI Guiding Principles, along with a Parent Permission process for students aged 13 and older. Schools will communicate directly with families regarding these requirements as needed. As a district, we remain committed to staying current with the impact of AI and exploring how it can be used safely, ethically, and effectively to enhance teaching and learning while building awareness and digital literacy.
We also want to emphasize the importance of positive and meaningful communication between families and schools. I encourage everyone to review our Guidelines for Positive Communication which help foster respectful and productive relationships within our school communities. Additionally, consistent attendance remains one of the strongest indicators of student success. Attached, you will find information for parents about Why Student Attendance Matters. Schools will continue to work closely with families and reach out to support strong attendance routines.
