School District No. 53 (Okanagan Similkameen), serves approximately 2,500 students. Our district is located in the sunny Okanagan and Similkameen valleys of British Columbia and serves students in the communities of Okanagan Falls, Oliver, Osoyoos, Keremeos, Cawston and Hedley. In 2013, our district embarked on an inclusive process to establish a vision, mission, and core values for the district (below).  This work will serve as a compass to improve student success, to guide how we work together and how we focus our efforts and allocate resources click here to view documentation of the process.

Trades Exploration Week PRESS RELEASE

The Province is expecting to have a shortage of skilled workers in the coming years.  As a result the ITA is working with school districts to promote trades to young people. Throughout the 2014 -15 school year grades 5, 6,and 7 students will be participating in YES 2 IT Trades Exploration Week .  This is a joint initiative between School District 53, the Industry Training Authority, local trades people, andl ocal businesses. There will be 3 local tradesmen coming into the schools to demonstrate their trade and allow grades 6 and 7 students hands-on experience. This year we are focusing on the construction trades of sheet metal, metal fabrication and welding. Local businesses and the Industry Training Authority have stepped up to provide materials for this day to allow students an in-depth quality hands-on experience in a variety of trades.

Similkameen Elementary Trades Exploration Week will be November 2 -6 2015
Oliver Elementary Trades Exploration Day will be December 8 – 14, 2015
Tuc el Nuit Elementary Trades Exploration Week will be January 4 – 8 2016
Okanagan Falls Elementary Trades Exploration Week will be January 11 – 15, 2016
Osoyoos Elementary Trades Exploration Week will be January 18 – 22, 2016

As part of the YES 2 IT Program we are encouraging parent participation. This will allow parents to increase their understanding of trades, benefits of trades, opportunities in trades and how trades programs are an option as post-secondary education. By providing the same experience for both parents and students we hope this opens the door to a discussion of trades as a possible career choice. It is our hope that students' exposure to trades will get students interested and excited about being able to solve problems and build solutions.
