Drawing & Painting 11 is a specific studio art course which will specialize in 2-D projects, theory and communication.

Visual Elements and Principles of Art and Design
Students perceive and respond to images in ways that demonstrate their understanding of the visual elements and principles of art and design.

Students create images that communicate their under-standing of and appreciation for the visual elements and principles of art and design and how they are used to communicate.

Students perceive and respond to images from a variety of different types of artworks in ways that demonstrate their understanding of how the choice of materials, technologies, and processes affects images.
Students create images that demonstrate their ability to communicate effectively using a variety of materials, technologies, and processes.

At the end of this course, students will be able to say:

Drawing & Painting 11 must incorporate the following content within the delivery of the prescribed learning outcomes for Studio Arts 11
(page 39 of Studio Arts IRP 2002)
Technical Competence
• knowledge and skilled use of materials for drawing and painting:
- mark-making materials for drawing (e.g., pencil, inks, pastels)
- mark-making materials for painting (e.g., acrylic paint, watercolour, tempera, oil paint)
- surfaces—both 2-D and 3-D (e.g., canvas, paper, wood, found objects)
- single medium, mixed-media
• knowledge and skilled use of tools and equipment for drawing and painting:
- mark-making tools (e.g., brushes, pens, stylus)
- manipulating tools (e.g., tools erasers, stumps, sponges, palette knives)
- surfaces and supports (e.g., palettes, easels, boards)
• knowledge and skilled use of processes and techniques for drawing and painting:
- drawing techniques (e.g., continuous line, gesture, tonal, contour)
- painting techniques (e.g., impasto, wet on wet, wash)
- additive and subtractive processes (e.g., erasing, wiping, glazing)
- mixed-media processes (e.g., layering, collage)
• knowledge and skilled use of image-development strategies as they apply
to drawing and painting
• knowledge and skilled use of visual elements and principles of art and design as they apply to drawing and painting
Presentation Applications
• considerations for venue, audience, and purpose
• matting, mounting, framing
• artist’s statements
• exhibition considerations (e.g., selecting, arranging, hanging)
Visual Culture
• artists, artworks, and movements in drawing and painting across a variety of contexts
• drawing and painting genres (e.g., landscape, portraiture, still life)
• purposes and applications of drawing and painting (e.g., architectural renderings, literary illustrations, murals)
• terminology related to drawing and painting
• career pathways related to drawing and painting
Evaluation Procedures
Studio Art 11 (Drawing & Painting) is evaluated within two categories:
        *Art Projects                   60%
        *Assignments/Sketchbook                 40%

Departmental Study Skills Expectations
It is assumed and expected that each student is prepared to work towards the four credits awarded upon completion.~ Studio Art 11 (Ceramics & Sculpture) will improve upon students’ study skills such as listening and note-taking, home study, research, organization, and most directly, management of time and materials.~

Art pencils (2B, 4B, 6B) or a set               Coloured pencils (24 set)
White eraser                                    Black felt pens, fine point (3)
Glue sticks                                     Scissors & tape
If you have other supplies, feel free to bring them.  Label everything!
