See Mrs. Goncalves to get in on the action.
Okana Qen
The first time the school yearbook was called the "Okana Qen" was in 1951. It is the Salish Indian way of saying the name of the area, we call the Okanagan today.

The word is possibly derived from "Kan" meaning "head or top" and "Nockan" meaning "seeing." The word applied to the lower Okanagan River near Oroville, Washington.

From this general meeting place, the Indians got a view of the sharp peaked Mt. Chopaka, which lies some miles to the west, beyond the Similkameen River, and according to legend, Chopaka is a transformed Indian maiden.
