The Snake P.I.T. (Positive Intervention & Tutoring)
Policies and Procedures
Purpose
  • To provide support for students who are experiencing difficulties completing homework.
  • To provide a quiet place where students can complete assignments or study for tests.
  • A place where students can receive after school help from a qualified teacher or peer tutor.
Time and Location

  • Monday – Thursday, 11:20-12 and 2:50 – 3:50pm, Library
Referral Process

  • Teacher, Parent or Student referrals are welcome.
  • A grade 8, 9 or 10 student will enter Homework Club after the 4th time a student does not complete his/her homework during a semester in any course.
  • Teachers complete a PIT Referral Form and submit it to the Vice Principal.
  • Vice Principal will contact the parent and meet with the student to explain the PIT process.
  • The student receives a duo-tang containing Daily Homework Record Sheets and a letter to be given to the Parent to further explain the purpose, procedure and expectations of the program.
PIT – The Intervention

  • Once entered, the students must complete their homework for 15 days.
  • Each day (including Friday) the student must fill out a Daily Homework Record Sheet that includes:
  • A list of homework for the day and any missing assignments.
  • Teacher Signatures for each class.
  • Student Signature when all homework is completed at the end of the day.
  • Parent Signature - parent has checked for homework completion.
  • If any teacher signature is missing, the student is required to stay after school in the PIT and complete his/her homework or missing assignments.
  • If the Daily Homework Record Sheet is complete, student is “signed off” by the Library Assistant (until 3:30) or the Supervising Teacher and allowed to leave.
  • An incomplete day will result in the student going back to day 1, 5, or 10.  Once a student successfully reaches day 5, he/she will no longer go back to day 1 for an incomplete day, just back to day 5. Once a student successfully completes day 10, he/she will no longer go back to day 5 for an incomplete day, only back to day 10.
Teacher Supervisor’s Role

  • Check and sign the Daily Homework Record Sheets. On Mondays, the supervisor must check both the previous Friday and the current Monday record sheets.
  • Record attendance and day # in the PIT Supervisor’s Duo-tang.
  • Pass on the names of any No Shows to the Vice Principal. Check against the daily attendance, the student may be absent for the day. (See PIT –No Shows slip)
  • Supervise and help students with their assignments.
  • Important information to help the supervising teacher:
  • Students must show up and check-in before 2:50pm.
  • Once in the Library, students are not allowed to leave until 3:50pm. (Use teacher discretion)
  • Bags must be left near the front door of the Library.
  • Try not to let the students use the computers unless the Daily Homework Record Sheet indicates that a computer is necessary to complete an assignment.  Sit the student at a computer location whereby you can see the monitor at all times.
  • Try to isolate the students at different tables/computer locations and ask their friends to leave if they are not working.
  • Any discipline problems, send the student to the office or send home.  Leave a note with the Vice Principal.
  • Maintain a quiet, positive, helpful learning environment. (Be strict!!)
